Port Elizabeth - a City of
Sports
Port Elizabeth has a strongly established
sporting tradition.
Although a much younger city than Cape
Town, Port Elizabeth has both the oldest
cricket ground and the oldest bowling green in South
Africa, both in St George's Park which is itself the
oldest park in the country.
It also hosted South Africa's
first international cricket and rugby matches. All team
sports are accommodated as are athletics, road running and
multi-discipline events such as the Iron Man competition.
There are some excellent golf courses in
and nearby the city, most notably Humewood, which is the
only true links course in South Africa.
Lawn bowls is very popular in Port
Elizabeth and there are
numerous clubs.
Algoa Bay is one of the best
sailing venues in the world, offering fantastic sailing in a
wide variety of winds. It is rare that there is a day
without even a breeze.

The same can be said for other
water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. Jetskis
have great fun too.
There is quite reasonable surfing in the
bay and some of the best in the world only 40 minutes' drive
away at Jeffrey's Bay.
Diving conditions in Algoa Bay are
excellent. As a matter of interest, there are approximately
400 shipwrecks to be found in and around the bay. If that is
not exciting enough, one can even dive in the predator tank
of the Bayworld Aquarium.
Almost needless to say, Algoa Bay
offers excellent angling, whether off the piers and rocks or
deep sea game fishing. |
