Port Elizabeth - the Hinterland - Game & Nature Reserves

Port Elizabeth is perfectly situated to provide convenient access to a variety of nature experiences.

Less than an hour's drive away are the Addo Elephant National Park, with it's unique herd of Addo elephants, Shamwari, which is rated as Africa's very best game reserve, and other fine game reserves.

Here the "Big Five" can be seen in the Eastern Cape's malaria-free environment. A little further away are more game reserves offering game viewing, camera safaris and hunting.

Also an hour's drive away or less from Port Elizabeth are the surfing Mecca of Jeffrey's Bay and the lovely resorts along the shores of St Francis Bay or the attractive little city of Grahamstown which is packed with history.

Port Elizabeth is also the ideal base from which to take a trip, via the fertile and beautiful Gamtoos River Valley, through the fabulous Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve with it's wilderness area. As some 30 kms of the route are totally unsuitable for cars, 4x4 or high-rider vehicles are recommended.

To derive the most enjoyment, a two or three day trip is recommended and the return can either be the same way or via the Langkloof or Steytlerville valleys.

If you do not have a suitable vehicle you can still go on a guided tour of the Baviaanskloof click here for more information.
