Port Elizabeth - A City of Hikes and Walks

Port Elizabeth has a large number of walks of great variety. Some of these can be tackled either as lengthy walks or broken up into short strolls.

  • The Donkin Heritage Trail. This walk, with a booklet guide published by the city's Historical Society, takes one around the older, central part of the city and includes no less than forty seven places and sights of historical, architectural and visual interest.

  • The "Ghost" Tour. A guided, evening tour of some of Port Elizabeth's graveyards and haunted buildings with the legends pertaining to them expounded by a local historian.

  • The Beachfront. The entire length of the main beachfront area from King's Beach to the end of Summerstrand has a landscaped esplanade popular with serious and casual walkers alike.

  • Beaches. For those who simply like walking on sandy beaches Bluewater Bay, Cape Receife and Sardinia Bay offer endless white beaches.  At Cape Receife is a lighthouse and not far offshore is the infamous Thunderbolt Reef.

  • Guinea Fowl Trail. A hike along the valley of the Baakens River from it's source to Settlers' Park, a short distance from the Bay. Much of the way is forested and it is often difficult to realise that one is walking through the heart of Port Elizabeth. This walk can be broken down into shorter segments.

  • Roseate Tern Trail. A 9 km walk with considerable variety. It takes one along the beach past the Cape Receife lighthouse and Thunderbolt Reef, through part of the nature reserve where there is a bird hide for viewing the water fowl and through the dunes to an observation point which formed part of the defences during the Second World War. The nature of this trail is such that it also can be broken down into a variety of shorter walks.

  • Sacramento Trail. A very popular 8 km round-trip hike between Schoenmakerskop and Sardinia Bay either along the beach or along the bushy dunes overlooking the beach. It is named for a Portuguese ship which sank on reefs offshore. The ship was carrying cannons cast in Macau on the China coast and one of those that was recovered stands at the Schoenmakerskop end of the trail.

  • The Island. Three different hilly walks in indigenous forest a short distance out of Port Elizabeth's urban area of two to sixteen kilometers depending on one's energy level.
